After an MPhil in Birmingham and a PhD in Cambridge, which included a spell at the University of Paris (Panthéon-Sorbonne) as a visiting student, Charles spent a year as a research fellow at Hertford College in Oxford, before joining the Department in 2008. During research leave in 2014-16, Charles was a Humboldt Fellow at the University of Tübingen and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Edinburgh. Charles’s research concentrates on earlier medieval European history, with a particular interest in the dynamics of change. His research has been supported by grants from the AHRC and the Humboldt Foundation.
