Dissent Goes Global

It’s widely known that America values dissent: Hundreds, if not thousands, of social rights activists, politicians, writers, and revolutionaries have emerged throughout our nation’s history and effected change. However, it’s unfair to view dissent as a purely American activity. As we have seen time and again, from the Arab Spring to the heated demonstrations in Rio de Janeiro, the right to dissent has gone global. In this slideshow, we highlight twenty of the world’s most prominent dissenters.
